Jose Vilandy

Jose Vilandy works his magic at Origin. In 2008 he claimed both the Western Cape regional and South African Barista Champ titles. Originating from Angola, he mentions how his father was involved in coffee plantations there.

Coffee is in my blood.

His love affair with coffee wasn’t at first sight but rather caused by another sense. While working as a barman he admits to drinking espresso as a means to keep lively during long shifts. It wasn’t long before coffee had cast its spell over Jose and he speaks of how it was the aroma that grabbed him.

I fell in love with the smell of coffee

Jose proudly boasts his involvement with Origin and the fact that he was the second employee to be hired. You need only speak to him for a minute to see how passionate he is about coffee and his occupation as a barista.

Mr Vilandy is so naturally talented as a barista it scares me…in a good way. He’s not the smallest guy but has this almost slight-of-hand flow over an espresso machine. He takes out the portafilter, cleans it then gets chattin about this and that, then joops. Your coffee is ready. Best espresso, best milk texture and effortlessly amazing latte art…can’t wait for him to compete and represent SA again (no discred to Ishan : D). Oh yes, and he can even play guitar and sing pretty well too.
