Olympia Bakery

Olympia Bakery, or simply Olympia as it is referred to by most, has been around as long as the mountain, if not longer. Situated on Kalk Bay Main Road, the antique store Mecca of Cape Town, this little spot is adored by all that have walked through its doors.

The interior has a rustic charm. The tables sit in close proximity to one another and look as if they have been there since they opened, weathered by hours of conversation. Breakfast, lunch and wine selections are on black board menus propped up on the walls. The cake display is conveniently situated on the right as you walk in, throwing your initial ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude towards the delicious cheesecake right out of the window. If that isn’t tempting enough, a bakery trolley jam packed with pastries ensures the sweet aroma makes its way to your table. The food is good and the omelettes are definitely worth a try. Olympia is serving Origin coffee and doing a great job of it.

The café is always abuzz with people and this may be the reason why they have a separate shop just around the corner, catering for those that are limited for time. Here you will find a bountiful selection of breads, bakes, biscuits and sandwiches. They also do a Cab Franc that is made from the boutique vineyard behind the building. That’s right; check it out next time you are there. You can also grab a quick coffee for the road here. While this quick fix will certainly cure a coffee craving it doesn’t quite compare to sipping your coffee while perched at the window, gazing at the habour or reading the daily news. An experience not to be missed.

Olympia doesn’t serve origin anymore. Their coffee prices have gone up and the taste of the coffee has sadly gone down.
