If you have ever traveled to Bangkok, you will be familiar with the interesting scene the city offers. I’m not talking about ladyboys, deep fried crickets or even a Thai man in full Elvis attire singing Ryperd, or Lay-perd as it came out. Nope, none of these. What I am referring to is a city of grey buildings crammed in such concentration that they appear as if they are competing for the block. But scattered in between are small, beautifully ornate Buddhist temples, radiating with colour against the grey façade of the neighbouring structures.
Cape Town’s Woodstock area is not far off. Rich in large warehouses and run down buildings and like Bangkok it has a number of interesting establishments that glow amongst the grey. Superette is one of these places. Situated on Albert Road, it is the latest work of Cameron Munro and Justin Rhodes, the guys who brought us the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill as well as the WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery.
The interior is stylish and simple with a number of vintage pieces and artworks. Local flavour is present in the design as well as the food. The menu is prepared by chef Lyndall Maunder and Aisha Redpath Treppo, who make the most of locally sourced stuff. Lyndall shed some light on their impetus on the food front. Their focus is on providing quality food and quality products.
We want to offer the best of everything.
And this is exactly what they are doing. There is an interesting array of products available from Eureka Mills stone ground flour to Wasabi nuts to beverages from Juicebox. They are open for breakfast and lunch and offer daily bakes, sandwiches, salads and the likes. Wholesome, organic and tasty. They also have a monthly Supper Club that showcases their creative and finer dinning side. Think rabbit and prune terrine or sweetbreads with smoked celeriac mash.
The coffee? They are serving Deluxe beans and to ensure it is just as delicious as if it were served at their own spot in Church Street, they have moved barista Nick Minnaar to keep things flowing.
Visit Superette on Albert Road, Monday to Friday from 9 till 4 and Saturdays from 9 till 2.
