The Daily Deli

The Daily Deli

It’s the kind of place you find by mistake. A well kept secret, nestled away on a street of beautiful Victorian semi-detached houses. The deli itself is probably the same size as your bathroom at home but all the magic happens in the kitchen downstairs. The seating is all outdoors. A handful of two-seater tables are sheltered under a small roof with the remainder extending along the sidewalk under umbrellas when necessary. There is one small table indoors but I would take a seat outside where you get a cool street seating vibe and view of Lions Head.

The Daily Deli is celebrating its 12th birthday in August and has in this time built up a following of devoted locals, some of whom visit daily. Owner, Theresa Daly tells me coffee is of the utmost importance to her. They have experimented with a number of coffee brands over the years and have decided to stick with Buondi.

It is difficult to function without it. I notice how my regulars come alive after their first cup in the morning.

Breakfast is served all day and there are only two words you need to remember: Full Monte! Scrambled egg, mushrooms, bacon, emmenthaler and avo. I also recommend having this stack on a lightly toasted bagel – believe me, you wont be disappointed. There is also a Baby Monte option that is just a smaller version of the big guy for those that aren’t ravenous. There are also a number of ‘health breakfast’, hot breakfast and croissant and muffin options to fill the gap.

For lunch you will find a variety of salads and hot meals but most noteworthy is their selection of pizzas that are also available for dinner. Try the bowl of olives, it’s unlike any you have tried before.

I haven’t been to Daily Deli in a couple of months but I think they have some of the best scrambled eggs and bacon in Cape Town.

A true capetonian ‘hole-in-the-wall” – They undoubtedly have the tasiest mexian pizza in town – accompanied with a special order of red, green on white olives on the side. Get on and unwind with the locals.
