Joanne Berry

Born and bred in Cape Town, Joanne Berry wasn’t always involved in coffee. Following her studies at the University of Cape Town, Joanne found herself in London, working in HR. Not particularly excited about her line of work, she and a friend decided to open their own café. They both attended the London School of Coffee to gain more insight into the coffee world but things didn’t quite work out as planned and the café was to remain a dream for the time being. But the coffee bug had bitten and Joanne started working as a barista over weekends while maintaining her regular day job during the week.

It was on a six-week holiday back home to South Africa that Joanne decided to email Origin Coffee Roasters for a position. A number of interviews later and Joanne was fully in the mix doing what she does best. The decision was made to head back to London but she had left her mark on Origin. They pursued her and after a couple of months she was back. She has been at Origin for just over a year and is currently the Head Trainer of their barista school.

Her favourite coffee quote is from English playwright, John Van Druten.

If I were a woman, I’d wear coffee as a perfume.

Joanne will be representing the Cape in the National Barista Champs to be held in March next year. Good luck, Jo. You go girl!
