I’ll admit that I’m envious of the Durbanites. Not because they get to swim in the ocean for hours on end without the affliction of an ice cream headache and frozen extremities. Not because winter never seems to get the memo and as a result they get to sport Havaianas all year round. I envy the Durbanites because they have Bean Green.
Bean Green is owned and run by father and daughter team, Peter and Mel Winter. The interior is unassuming with wooden tables and flooring, chairs with Hessian coffee bag covered cushions and a couch. An alcove in the back is the source of a small selection of sarmies and freshly baked cakes and tarts and a royal red roaster occupies the far right corner of the room.
While all this adds to the magic of this little place, there are two constituents that place Bean Green in a league of their own.
Firstly, the coffee offering is unlike anything you will find in the country. Bean Green serves only Ethiopian beans. You’ll find exquisite examples of Harrar, Yirgacheffe, Limu, Jimma, Sidamo and Lekempti beans, served individually as single origins or as part of one of their blends. I tasted ‘The Bluff Bru!’ their house blend, comprising of Harrar, Yirgacheffe, Sidamo and Limu beans. Full bodied with a smooth finish, this coffee is much like a marshmallow that has been lightly toasted on the fire and dipped into orange and almond dark chocolate.
Secondly, they have a record player that is operational and not only for show. In my opinion, there is no better sound than that produced by an old school deck. For sure, it doesn’t have the crisp clarity that modern sound systems possess but there is something about the way that the music romantically fills every inch of a room, making it feel like the artist or band is performing right next to you, that can’t be beat.
