TriBeCa

I’m not familiar with the coffee scene in Pretoria. In fact, I’ve only been to one spot. But going on what I found, there doesn’t seem to be much need to travel elsewhere.

TriBeCa in Design Square is celebrating its 13th birthday this year. While that’s only a teenager to us, in the industry it’s a lifetime. And there is no secret to the recipe of their success. The coffee is top-notch, the staff are friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is relaxed. There is ample parking and almost all the items on the menu, particularly the chicken and mushroom pizza, warrant a mention in your next letter to Gran.

Despite being blown away by my lunch and cup of ‘Kilimanjaro Organic’, which is a full-bodied, sweet coffee with berry and chocolaty notes, what I loved most about this place was the décor. The interior is divided into three sections, each with its own character and brightly coloured flare but keeping within a common theme that runs throughout. Most intriguing is the section on the left, which is clad in old-school photographs of a random couple’s traveling adventures back in the 70’s.

I frequent this awesome cafe, and I love it. Best coffee in town! However…service is generally rather slow. If you want to chill out and take your time getting your food, then this is the place to be. And I’ve found that it’s quicker to just leave money on the table for the bill, rather than to wait for the waiter to bring it (but they are rather quick once you stand up and motion to leave without paying…). The burgers are also spectacular!

Some of my favorite coffee spots in Pretoria are, Seattle Coffee Co. (Menlyn Park, Brooklyn Mall, Woodlands Boulevard), Beans About Coffee (Irene Village Mall) and Abreu’s Coffee (Wonderboom Junction)

Another one I’ve spotted but haven’t enjoyed a cup at is Bean There (Cnr. Lynnwood & Brooklyn)

    Be sure to stop by!
