“What do I want to do and where do I want to live?” were the questions Lameen Abdul-Malik, owner of Escape Caffe and Nobel Peace Prize winner, found himself asking. The answers were simple enough. “Coffee and Cape Town.”
His little coffee spot on Bree Street opened last September but the dream was born many years ago. While working for the International Atomic Energy Agency, Cape Town became a regular stopover during his travels throughout Africa. He fell in love with the city and having always had a love for coffee it seemed only natural to combine the two. What followed this decision was five years of solid research. He wanted to know everything there was to know about coffee before he opened his café so he attended conferences and spoke to as many people as possible: World Barista Championship winners, machine manufacturers, coffee shop owners, roasters, you name it, documenting his newly acquired coffee knowledge on his blog, From Coffee with Love, as he went along.
Lameen has kept things simple at Escape with the offering of coffee, snacks and cake. The lounge-like space is comfortable and relaxed and the staff are attentive and friendly. Espresso Lab is his coffee supplier of choice and you can opt for either the seasonal blend or the organic. There is also a monthly coffee tasting on the first Saturday of the month. Watch this space for more details.

Ummm logo inspiration from Intelligentsia perhaps!!!!
There is another coffee company who has done the same sort of Itelligentsia design. So it’s not really a first.
I think the cup and wing looks awesome!
Excellent coffee and friendly staff a good find thanks to ilovecoffee. Trying all your places one by one.
Visited Escape Caffe for the first time yesterday, what a lovely place and even nicer shop owner, Lameen adds extra warmth to the already excellent coffee.
Logo inspiration relates to flight and hence “escape”, attached to an espresso cup, to highlight we are serious about coffee. Intelligentsia wings are very different.
