The Woodlands Eatery

It isn’t very difficult to fall in love with Woodlands. As a coffee spot it’s not the kind of place you can pop into willy-nilly as they’re only open in the evenings during the week and over weekends. However, this adds to the magic of the place in an absence-makes-the-heart-grow-fonder kind of way and makes having a coffee here a really special treat.

The interior is a feast of contrasting textures with sleek walls in muted hues meeting coarse face brick, weathered wood panels and concrete.  On one side of the room a row of bank-seated tables sit beneath a swarm of low-lying lampshades while the opposite end accommodates smallish well-spaced out wooden tables with mismatched chairs. Collages of quirky framed illustrations feature throughout and a beautiful bar sits invitingly at the back of the restaurant. There are a couple of tables outside and a couch that is generally snapped up by customers in musical chair-like fashion.

The menu consists of daily specials and a number of standard items. You’ll find starters like the Gooseberry and Goats Cheese Salad, Salt & Pepper Squid or Crispy fried Chicken Wontons. For mains, opt for a Chickpea, Lentil & Butternut Burger, Wild Mushroom Pasta or Beef Quesidilla. They also do a range of heavenly pizzas. Try the tuscan slow roasted lamb with rosemary and crème fraiche – you won’t be disappointed. The chocolate fondant is also dangerously delicious.

On Sunday evenings you can indulge in some delicious Chinese fare from the South China Noodle Factory alongside the regular Woodlands menu. Clinton and Ed, who trade at the Hope Street Market, set up a small station and serve Pot Stickers, fresh egg noodles and Char Siu Bao throughout evening. You really don’t want to miss this.
