Merchants Cafe

When you put these two together…

…only great things can happen.

Add in Hanneli Rupert and Tammy Tinker from Merchants on Long, Liam Mooney, Michael Chandler and an awesome little space on Long Street to this duo of Larry Steenkamp of Woodlands Eatery and the Field Office’s Will Hobson and you’ve got magic…in the form of Merchants Café.

Merchants opened on Monday and while the opening of a new coffee spot, such as this, is exciting enough in itself they’ve got something even more exciting in their Merchant bag of tricks.

The café is open from 8am to 3pm and serves up a mean deluxe cuppa, breakfast and lunch. For breakfast there are two routes – if you’re the health conscious type or are in need of a little something to fool yourself into better about last night’s indulgence there is muesli, fruit and yoghurt. If you fit into neither of those categories then you can make up your own hot breakfast starting with your choice of either Brioche, rye, or sourdough and how you fancy your done eggs, and then branching out from there with extras like wild mushrooms, streaky bacon, pan fried tomatoes, artichokes and/or asparagus. For lunch it’s a chef’s table with a protein and three salads/starches for R60 or four salads/starches for R40. They’ve also got a selection of Devils Peak beers on tap and ciders from Eversons.

And now for the other exciting bit…wait for it…from 4pm to close Merchants Cafe becomes a ‘Pop-Up’ platform. Once a month, for a week, the space will be home to a pop-up restaurant ranging from old established favourites to the newly opened spots. They will also be having ‘best of’ pop-ups –  think burger week with a different burger joint each day. On the days when there isn’t a pop-up you can swing past for a couple of drinks at the bar and some tapas.

The first pop-up is Eight at Spier and is taking place this evening. Tickets are R270 and include a five-course meal and a bottle of wine per couple. For bookings you can pop them a mail at café@merchantsonlong.cocom or give Taz a call on 0835708368.
