Next time you’re strolling the oak lined avenues of Stellenbosch, and something toasty and delicious fills your nostrils, follow your feet that will be pulling you toward The Blue Crane and The Butterfly and pop your head in.
Situated at the top of Dorp Street, The Blue Crane and The Butterfly has managed to lasso an incredibly faithful following of locals that frequent the space for their all day caffeine fix. From 6am, the seductive aroma of roasting beans wafts its way through the town. And it kind of has a pied piper effect on the passer bys. People start streaming in for the beautiful coffees that are created here, enticed by the roasting beans. The owning Jones couple, Michael, a Scotsman from Glasgow, and his wife Chrisna, a born and bred South African, returned from the land of kilts and haggis to greener pastures, where Stellenbosch provided the perfect setting for them to set up their enchanting space. Surname aside, this is by no means where one needs to keep up with the Jones’. The Blue Crane and The Butterfly is honest, humble coffee and food at its best.
Michael’s passion for his coffee is contagious, and a minute or two spent discussing his El Salvadorian wares, and you’ll quickly learn that this is by no means your average, happy-go-lucky coffee shop. He professes that he likes his flat whites to have the same texture and consistency as his pint of Guinness. And that it does. The micro foam mimics a beautiful head of classic stout, lining the coffee cup until the final sip. Slightly smoky with a hint of spice, the El Salvadorian beans have become a favourite amongst the regulars that bash down the door for their cuppa.
Sit on the pavement and soak up the sun away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy centre.
Take a wander to the back of the shop for a look at the poem on the wall, the sentiment behind the name of this institution. There’s a great story to it all.
Now open Thursday and Friday evenings for dinners.
