Judd Francis, one of the owners alongside Carl Wessel, tells me that it is on Church Street and I can’t miss it. But unless you know where Deluxe is or are actively searching for it, chances are you’ll walk straight past. This inconspicuous little spot is tucked away in the heart of the city and it conjures up feelings of exclusivity simply for knowing where it is. You will most likely visit here again before telling your friends about it.
Judd sits down next to me and admits that he is feeling a tad slow today after last night’s indulgences. This comes as a relief as I’m feeling much the same way. He whips out the latest GQ magazine and points out an article showcasing six of the best coffee shops in the country. He is proud of their inclusion on this list, and who wouldn’t be, considering they have only been open for three months. Although this spot is still a young’un, their reputation as a speciality coffee supplier is well established. Judd himself has been involved in coffee since he was sixteen. Sourced from all over the globe, you will find a selection of interesting blends and single origin coffee. Try the Fast Eddie’s Espresso blend. The blend is top secret so I can’t tell you the details but I can say that it is superb.
The interior is chic and fresh with an obvious retro feel. Cool bluish-grey walls contrast the curvy wood veneer furnishings while tall steel chairs line a sleek black counter. The sugar is housed in antique bowls reminiscent of those your Gran would use. A counter at the window allows you to spy on the foot traffic while enjoying the sweet sounds of Nina Simone. An artwork made from the body of a Vespa spans a wall and gives a subtle hint of Judd and Carl’s Vesparado affiliation.
There is no food served here and at first I was a tad disappointed, but after viewing the constant flow of people, I realised it wouldn’t be fair to have foodies taking up the already limited space. Judd further mentioned that he wasn’t a fan of crumbs, and that’s good enough reason in my books.
What is even more enticing about this spot is that you can treat yourself to a cup of Deluxe’s finest for only ten bucks! Need I say more?
Open from 7ish to 5, Monday to Friday.
