Don’t you love it when you come across those small things in life that make your heart beat faster? Things like arriving at a Monday night braai to find the host has put roasted pine nuts on the salad, that dodgy Chinese place that has the best pork dumplings in town or the distinct roar of a Mustang V8 engine. These things are as unique as your freckles but it’s a pretty safe bet to say that chocolate is up there with the best of them – unless you’re allergic to it, that is. I’m not talking about a Kit Kat chunky here; I am referring to REAL chocolate. The kind of stuff that makes your taste buds think they are at a disco, comes from a little chocolaterie in Greyton and goes by the name of Von Geusau.
The existence of these heavenly delights is the result of one man’s frustration with the corporate rat race and decision to acquire a simpler, less stressful existence. Richard Von Geusau explains how it all began with him browsing through a bookstore where he came across a book by chocolate legend, Chantal Coady. Totally inspired by her work, he contacted her in London. Her response was simple,
Come over and I will teach you everything I know.
And she did. Naturally, the next step was to visit Belgium to gain firsthand experience before heading back to Greyton to get the ball rolling. A couple years later, Richard has his own factory and a selection of chocolates wider than the Kalahari. Flavours like Masala Chai, Rose Geranium, Rock Salt and Earl Grey, you name it and its there.
Its no exaggeration when I say I was left grinning stupidly like an eight year old, for a good 40 minutes, after I tasted the chocolate for the first time. If you have tasted these chocolates you will understand my excitement. If you haven’t, we have good news. We are spreading the coffee and chocolate love throughout July. Join the aficionados and sign up for our newsletter and we could be sending you Von Geusau chocolate and delicious whole bean coffee from Seattle. Go on, your heart will thank you for it.
