The first thought that comes to mind when one mentions ‘Knysna’, is oysters. It is a conditioned response we are all familiar with and for good reason. That is unless you have experienced the slice of coffee and bread heaven that is Ile de Pain. One visit and your inner Pavlov’s dog will never be the same again. You have been warned.
Opened in 2002, Ile de Pain is the creation of professional chef, Liezie Mulder, and 5th generation baker, Markus Farbinger. Celebrated for their flavourful meals, wood fired breads and delicious pastries; it is the kind of place you would happily drive an hour to visit. Their coffee also makes it a great deal easier to convince a friend to join you on the drive. Their beans are from Origin and they are serving an amazing coffee donned the ‘Romano Blend.’ It is a clean cup with a sweet fruit driven finish and rich mouth feel.
The bread at Ile de Pain is said to be the best in the country and it’s easy to understand why. This creates a bit of a dilemma for those who don’t live in Knysna though, because once you have tasted it, everything else will seem mediocre. But it is a risk that is most definitely worth the reward.
