The post-surf cuppa; the equivalent of the cold energade after a long run, the 2am chicken pie after a student night out and the grappa after a romantic date-night dinner. If you have ever braved the icy waters of the Cape you will understand why it is imperative you get your hands on something warm as soon as possible. While the summer sun is valuable in the thawing process, it isn’t quite as effective as coffee in bringing back sensation to one’s extremities.
Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg has been a cowabunga mecca for yonks. According to Alan, a guy who runs history tour groups and who says stuff like ‘18 voetsak’, Surfer’s Corner celebrated their centenary this year. It is a great place to learn how to surf and you can rent a board and wetsuit for a couple hundred bucks. The whole experience is a must and what makes surfing at Muizenberg even better is that you need not travel far to get yourself a cuppa. Just over the road from the beach is Knead. Established in 2006 by brothers Evan and Ryan Faull, Knead is best known as a place of baking artistry. A bread house serving freshly baked breads and pastries in every shape and size. Other than picking up that delicious loaf of sourdough to go, you can sit and make a selection from the menu that boasts breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, bunny chows and more. Try the all day pizza – it’s to die for.
Did I mention that the coffee is great? They are using Tribeca coffee and their baristas are presenting some serious latte art. See pic below of a flat white swan! Knead also shares one of its entrances with the Roxy Surf shop so you can expect surfers to be strolling past barefoot. I say, nothing wrong with a bit of eye candy with your flat white.
