Social Drinks is a brand new pop-up coffee store serving hot, delicious coffee and drinks, and a selection of pastries. It moves among shopping centres and events across South Africa, and generates both income and awareness.
In line with its culinary nature, the Social Drinks project also supports the distribution of nutritious cereals at sites in townships and rural areas associated with iLearning Centres. Learners often receive just one meal a day in these areas, with minimal nutrition, and their physical and intellectual development is stunted – let alone the ability to concentrate for a full school day. Social Drinks give these learners nutritious breakfasts for free, provided they arrive before school starts, in school uniform. The principle: one cup of coffee feeds one child.
Members of The Social Project initially noticed that learners weren’t eating enough nutritious food throughout the day, and set out to change this by starting the pop-up coffee shop. R2 from each purchase covers the cost of one meal at cost price and the rest of the balance goes to covering operational costs.
In March alone, Social Drinks was able to provide around 800 meals a week. The ultimate aim is to generate significant funding for the iLearning Centre programme, to feed every iLearning child who needs it, as well as to fund future Social Project ventures.
The first Social Drinks shop opened up in the middle of March and is moving to The Pavillion in Durban at the end of May.
The menu includes a wide variety of options, including The World’s Most Instagrammed Coffee #CoffeeInACone, Sticky Hot Chocolate, Banting Biscuits, Traditional Flat White, and the option to donate R2 to sponsor an additional meal.
