“Welcome Home” says Judd, the waiter/owner, through a cheery smile. Justin, the manager, greets me with our own version of a “high five” every time I walk into The Corner Café, I guess it’s because I’m there almost every day. Most of the customers sitting in ‘our’ Glenwood café are there more often than I am. Some of us, especially Mishi Jones, who may just be there all day, every day, have our own little office at a café table, while others inhabit this coffee haven to stay out of the office for as long as possible. It’s a family café, with “Nev the Barber” and “iKhaya” adding to the already fantastic environment.
The Corner Café is an eco-restaurant that tries to conduct business in a manner that least disrupts the environment. Jeanie, the cook, prepares a menu every few weeks from quality local ingredients, all seasonal. Beverages are ordered in glass bottles, no plastic or tin and they do not stock plastic straws. Serviettes are linen not paper. All washing and cleaning is done with dolphin friendly detergents. Excess kitchen scraps are fed into the wormery and turned into worm tea, which in turn feeds the garden from which they grow their own herbs. They do not use microwaves or chip fryers. They do not use bathroom aerosols but instead use flower essential oils.
Even their espresso blend, roasted and blended by Colombo Fine Beverage Co., is all African and all seasonal. Their current winter espresso blend called “Judd”, is made up of semi-washed Zimbabwe Farfell, fully-washed Ethiopia Limu and dry processed Uganda Drugar. All these origin coffees take the earth into mind when growing and processing. Colombo works hand in hand with The Corner Café barista’s and staff to create something special every season, while sticking to a remarkable flavour profile. You have to taste it to know the difference. The roastery is also 750m down the road, so there’s another carbon footprint point! Just ordinary people trying to save the planet one cappuccino at a time. That could be why I feel so at home there. Or it might be Judd’s witty retorts, or Jeanie’s amazing cooking, or the sweet atmosphere…Heck, I love everything about this place and apparently so does everyone else in Durban.
