Los Muertos Motorcyles. Put simply, it’s a meeting place for people who are into bikes, real bikes. Not those girly things you see on the road but rather the kind of beauty that you can stare at in a creepy way without it being inappropriate. The joint is steeped in Café Racer culture. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, here’s a little background info…

The term refers to a style of motorcycle that was and is used for fast rides from one “transport café” or coffee bar to another.

The term was originally coined as an insult towards riders who were seen as playing at being road racers but merely parked outside cafés.

The café racer is a motorcycle that has been modified for speed and handling rather than comfort.

The bodywork and control layout of a café racer typically mimicked the style of a contemporary Grand Prix roadracer, featuring an elongated fuel tank, often with dents to allow the rider’s knees to grip the tank (Goodness gracious!), low slung racing handlebars, and a single, rearwardly mounted, humped seat.

This place also happens to have a kickass coffee offering. But what else would we expect from Brad Armitage and his cronie Craig Wessels? The café side of things is Nathi’s baby and it should be said that he pulls one helluva shot. There are goodies from Jason’s and Lady Cupcake.

And ladies, before you write this place off as a ‘Gentleman’s Club’ type vibe you should know that there appears to be a common ‘aesthetically pleasing’ thread among the operators of the machinery that may induce the same sort of staring mentioned above…

In response to the ridiculously cold weather Tribe is running a Winter Drive for the month of June to assist those hardest hit by Mother Nature’s wrath – the homeless. Tribe is appealing to customers to bring in clothes and blankets and in return they will receive a cup of Tribe’s best! If you’ve yet to visit Tribe’s new roastery at the Woodstock Foundry it’s also a good excuse to check out this awesome new space.

One takeaway cup a day for a year can create one ton of waste, clear 30m of forest or add 10 kg of carbon to the atmosphere. That’s the first truth.

The second truth is that people are not going to stop buying coffee, even at the thought of the first truth.

So, what’s the solution?

Digital advertising agency NATIVE and artisan coffee roaster TRUTH have come up an idea that they believe will help reduce the carbon footprint of takeaway cups. Enter the Seeds of Truth project – a reinvented biodegradable takeaway cup with a protector ring that is implanted with seeds. Here’s how it works:

The concept was introduced at Truth Headquarters yesterday and one can choose from either basil, thyme or rocket.

We give it the thumbs up!

It’s Bakoven. Most Capetonians may never even have heard of it. It’s a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” part of the Camps Bay side of the world, and Baked is just as inconspicuous as the area in which is finds itself. Owner and face of the new found gem, Zahir Mohamed, is incredibly passionate and excited about the prospects of what lies ahead. Having trained in both Italy and France as a baker and chef, Zahir’s breads, croissants and other oven created delicacies are superb. The opening of this beautiful space fills a gaping hole in the market for the population of Camps. The freshly baked goodies and a laid back, minimalist interior, combines to create a phenomenal, chic and effortlessly comforting experience. “I’m trying to create a lifestyle, not just a brand” says Zahir.

The beans used for the coffee are humbly called “The Baked Blend” and are roasted by Terbodore, but Zahir will be introducing his own roaster into the bistro so as to be able to do everything on site. The flat white was superb, and almost decadent. Fine micro foam coupled with delicious, lively fruit flavours, makes for an altogether refreshing experience. The coffee is sold by the bag to take home and is available ground or whole bean.

Baked Bistro is a pit stop everyone should make. It’s the place you want to laze about at on a sunny, Saturday morning, marinating in coffee bliss and brekkie heaven.

As a side note, once you’ve drunk the coffee, you have to have a go at the damn-fine, homemade lemonade. Wow!

So, we’re quite excited. In fact, we’re REALLY excited. Almost overboard excited about a little something called the Cape Town Coffee Guide. You might have seen one in your local coffee spot already. Not? Then you might want to ease up a little on ogling the eye candy.

The Cape Town Coffee Guide is a piping hot collaboration between ourselves and the folk over at B-Guided. We’re all about coffee and they’re all about guiding people in the direction of what’s hip and happening so it only made sense for us to join forces…and so we did. Hello, the Cape Town Coffee Guide.

The guide showcases a number of our favourite local, artisan coffee experiences in the Mother City including Bean There, Deluxe, Haas, Knead, Origin, Rosetta, Tribe & Truth. Beyond mapping the best spots to grab a cuppa around the city, it features a selection of the hard-working roasters behind the coffee, a few of the tastiest croissants in town and much more – all specially compiled to make sure you get to share in the culture of the Cape Town coffee space.

Starting out at varsity means a lot of good times with good friends, both old and new. It’s the 5 AM walk home and climbing over locked fences, it’s concerts, festivals, long days and even longer nights. Fortunately, there’s a scientifically formulated solution for getting After Hours Athletes through the morning after while they share their stories from the night before – it’s called coffee.
Puma Social After Hours Athletes on campuses across the country will be getting more than just a kick-start to another crazy day when they buy their coffee. They’ll grab a coffee card from the counter & be handed a Puma branded coffee cup cheering them on to tweet their best shot from the night before’s performance & #PUMAPhotoFinish to stand a chance to win R 2000.00 worth of Puma kit every week.

Just another cool way Puma Social are paying homage to the young & the brave.

Coffee shops and creatives across Cape Town are joining in on a campaign to help out the people affected by the fire that happened in Kayamandi on Friday the 15th of March. The fire, which took place in the early hours of Friday morning, destroyed 1295 shacks and the belongings and valuables of 4500 people, according to Disaster Management. It sadly also took the lives of two people.

I Love Coffee and an NPO called Milkshed are working together to get donation boxes to coffee shops and creative spaces around the city. Below is a list of those who are participating in the campaign, so far – there will be more to follow. What is needed are donations of clothing, bedding, towels, book, toys and any other items that you think might help the people of Kayamandi. All donations will be taken to the Stellenbsoch Fire Department where they will be fairly distributed by Disaster Management who is in control of the situation.

Follow Milkshed on facebook to be kept in the loop of whats happening and if you’d like to get involved you can drop them a mail on info@milkshed.co.za
